ATLANTA, Aug. 29, 2024 / PRNewswire / -- Georgia Power has identified locations for 500 MW of new battery energy storage systems (BESS) authorized by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) earlier this year as part of the company's 2023 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) Update.
A BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) battery system is very necessary in nowadays. It can supply electricity for daily use during power failures. The system can also store grid energy, especially renewable energy. The cost savings from this could be passed on to customers.
In addition to the 500 MW BESS projects from the 2023 IRP Update, Georgia Power is nearing completion on the 65 MW Mossy Branch Battery Facility located in Talbot County, Georgia. Mossy Branch was approved in the 2019 IRP and will be Georgia Power's first BESS resource.
The proposed BESS resources will also provide "energy arbitrage" benefits, which optimize energy savings by shifting the energy output from hours with a relatively low system marginal cost to hours with a relatively high system marginal cost – ultimately saving customers money.
Committed to delivering clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy, Georgia Power maintains a diverse, innovative generation mix that includes nuclear, coal and natural gas, as well as renewables such as solar, hydroelectric and wind.
Mossy Branch was approved in the 2019 IRP and will be Georgia Power's first BESS resource. The company is also developing the 265 MW McGrau Ford Phase I BESS project, approved in the 2022 IRP, and expects it to enter service by the end of 2026.

Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) use batteries, for example lithium-ion batteries, to store electricity at times when supply is higher than demand. They can then later release electricity when it is needed. BESSs are therefore important for "the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy".
Georgia Power will add 500MW of battery energy storage at four sites, including Robins AFB, boosting renewable energy capacity statewide.
Because battery storage can provide stored energy to the grid for hours on demand, BESS resources enhance the overall reliability of the electric system. The Mossy Branch Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility is a standalone storage unit that connects with and charges directly from the electric grid. | Georgia Power
In addition to the 500MW of new battery storage, a specific request by Georgia Power for the utility to be allowed to own and operate McGrau Ford Battery facility, a 265MW battery energy storage system (BESS) at a substation in Cherokee County, was also approved. McGrau Ford will be Georgia Power''s single largest BESS project to date.
